Each room has a private bathroom, AC and fan, cable TV, refrigerator and kettle. The earlier you book, the better your choice.

A word to the wise: the stairs to the 1st floor are great exercise and better suited if you don’t have any mobility issues.

A quiet sanctuary space in Nong Khai

Barn Suan Sanctuary

Six nights in a secluded garden retreat.

Barn Suan is our own private retreat space in a secluded landscaped garden on the outskirts of Nong Khai, with a communal space for cooking and activities.

Accommodation is in simple traditional huts — some a little more rustic than others. Each hut has its own bathroom; two have AC and the others have ceiling or bedside fans.

Food & meal budget suggestions

Simple, easy meals with room to choose.

This should help you work out a food budget. It takes effort to spend more than $15 a day on food, and you can certainly spend less, particularly if you patronise the Buddhist vegetarian restaurant.

Meals included in retreat cost

  • 2 cooking demonstration lunches
  • Meals on all orientation and sightseeing tours
  • A variety of treats at different times
  • All meals at Barn Suan, based around a Magical Mung Cleanse

Mut Mee kitchen

Open from 7am to 9pm, with Thai and Western dishes. More expensive meals are around $10; a basic Pad Thai is around $3.00.

Vegetarian restaurants

A short bike-ride away. You can eat a huge lunch and get a takeaway for dinner for $5–$7.

Green Market

Five minutes away for staples such as limes, ginger, bananas, papaya, pineapple, watermelon and avocadoes.

MSG is used fairly extensively in local restaurants and by street vendors, so Kaz’s recommendations are the best options if you want to avoid MSG. If you want to be more adventurous, we can teach you how to ask for no MSG in Thai.
